Short biography
Zhenbo Zhao received master bachelor’s Degree of power electronics and drive in 2003 from North China Electric Power University. Since joined Infineon China in 2006, he has rich experience on high power IGBT modules application. At present, he as system application engineer is responsible for technical support, production definition and G2M in solar and ESS application.
Short discription
Discrete semiconductors connected in parallel for high-power density solutions and design scalability have been adopted in many application scenarios. Key challenges of these solutions are to increase production efficiency and high current-carrying capacity, as well as to reduce the heat dissipation of the pins due to heavy load current with liquid cooling. Jointly connecting discrete pins and copper bus bars is one effective way of tackling these issues. This is done by resistance-welding technology. Owing to the different melting points on package surfaces, the metal-to-metal welding profile must be qualified for the discrete package and the relevant production process. This paper demonstrates the resistance-welding capability of the pins in the TO-247 PLUS discrete package, and validates the reliable joint connection between the discrete pins and the copper bus bar to flow through the current. It also includes an analysis of the cross-section and intermetallic compound(IMC) layer that was further made to achieve the qualified welding profile of this new package.
