High Ratio DC/DC Converter for Offshore Wind Farms with MVDC Collection System

Lei Li was born in 1992. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2014 and 2019, respectively, where he is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in power electronics. His current area of interests is the high-power DC/DC converters and MVDC collection system.

Large-scale long-distance offshore wind farms with MVDC collection system are rapidly becoming a preferred choice for power transmission. This paper proposes a high ratio DC/DC converter to interconnect the MVDC collection and HVDC transmission systems. It is comprised by mature half-bridge submodule strings, low-cost series-connection diodes valves and thyristors valves. Strings are alternatively in parallel to share large current of MVDC and in series to sustain high voltage of HVDC to improve utilization rate of the semiconductor installing capacity and converter efficiency. The topology structure, operating principle, and circuit design are discussed. The effectiveness of proposed converter is verified by simulation study of a 100MW 35kV/100kV system.

In order to pursuit lower system cost and higher power efficiency, the power of wind turbine becomes higher. Especially for offshore application, 8~10MW wind turbine is becoming popular . With this, high power density module is needed. This paper presents a high reliable power module ST20 which is suitable for offshore converters because of excellent performance such as low stray inductance, high current, excellent current sharing of module paralleling and easier DC-link connection. This paper also illustrates the benefits of ANPC topology for high power application, and investigates the feasibility of ST20 module used in an ANPC 10MW converter by simulation study. Furthermore, a 3-level reference design help to illustrate that ST20 module is a smart solution for high power offshore wind application with improved reliability.

This article proposes a hybrid isolated DC-DC (HIDC) converter with flexible control strategy. The HIDC converter is constructed by thyristors, modular multilevel arms at the MVDC side, and diodes at the LVDC side through transformer. The isolated structure of the converter can achieve high step-down ratio. Furthermore, by adjusting the duty cycle of submodule (SM) according to the input voltage, HIDC can ensure stable operation within a wide voltage range. Besides, the thyristor currents are controlled into three-phase staggered trapezoidal waves, so that the dc current is smooth without filter. The effectiveness is confirmed by simulation on a 500kW HIDC that converts 8~16kV to 750V. A scaled down prototype has been built to further prove the analysis above.

This paper introduces the latest trends in power converters in offshore wind turbines and analyzes the influence of different interconnection grid voltages. A benchmark analysis is performed by three types of IGBT modules for various grid voltage classes that are compatible with the same mechanical design in a unified converter cabinet. A detailed simulation model is also built including package equivalent resistance that can help get more accurate power loss, system efficiency, and temperature rise. These benchmark results are more meaningful in real system design. Furthermore, a 1800 Vac is proposed as a new grid interconnection voltage that can be realized with the latest 2300V IGBT half-bridge module in a three-level topology. This voltage class shows a lot of benefits in power losses and system efficiency. It also increases power density and reduces system cost.

Christos Mademlis received the Diploma degree in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in electrical machines from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1987 and 1997, respectively. Currently, he is full Professor at the same University. He is author and co-author of more than 80 peer-reviewed technical papers. His research interests are in the areas of electrical machines and drives, nearly zero energy buildings, renewable energy sources and electric vehicles.

This paper studies the problem of the efficiency improvement in a nearly zero energy building (nZEB) by increasing the efficiency of the domestic wind turbine (WT). Since the cost of the equipment in a nZEB plays a key role, a WT with a squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) is employed. The in-crease of the WT efficiency is attained through a minimum electric loss (MEL) controller for the SCIG that cooperates with a maximum point tracking controller (MPPT) that maximizes the output power of the WT. Several experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control system.
